In a stunning turn of events, PlayStation has dropped Hideo Kojima’s Physint, only for Xbox to immediately announce that it will be publishing the title.

This all began when PlayStation posted the following update on Twitter, providing an update on the project, and that they made the difficult decision to ‘step away’ from their collaboration with Kojima Productions.

An update from PlayStation Studios: After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game.

    Our relationship…

This was already a pretty huge surprise, considering how long Kojima and PlayStation have worked together. However, this rollercoaster isn’t over yet, as Xbox CEO Asha Sharma immediately responded to the announcement with one of their own.

Xbox then followed up with a much lengthier blog post via Xbox Wire that detailed exactly what’s going on.

Hideo Kojima has spent his career challenging conventions and expanding what games can be. Today, KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS announced the next chapter of its partnership with XBOX.

“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX,” said Asha Sharma, XBOX CEO.

“This expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world,” said Hideo Kojima, Game Creator and Founder of KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS.

In addition to OD and PHYSINT, this relationship will also extend beyond games, with XBOX and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS collaborating across film and television to bring new stories to broader audiences. We look forward to sharing more as development progresses.

Laslty, Hideo Kojima also took to Twitter to explain in further detail just what’s happened, revealing that that Sony was backed away from the ambitious project as of June this year. Kojima shared that the team at Kojima Productions then spent ‘the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner.’ That partner turned out to be Xbox, with whom Kojima shares a ‘common vision for the future.’

    Here’s his full statement –

As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.

This change up is already causing waves throughout the industry, with many expressing surprise at Sony’s decision to drop the project. Either way, for gamers that play on Xbox and of course, PC – it means another game from a widely respected creator releasing – not to mention the team is already working on OD with Xbox.
